Keemaya Study Abroad Guide — Germany

dMAT Germany 2026: the complete guide for Indian Master's applicants

A new Digital Master Test now sits inside the APS process for some Indian students applying to German Master's programmes. Here's exactly who it applies to, what it costs, when it runs, and how it fits alongside APS.

From 2026, the Digital Master Test (dMAT) has been introduced as an additional requirement for certain Indian students applying for Master's programmes in Germany. Understanding dMAT eligibility, APS requirements, registration, exam dates, fees and test centres is now part of planning your Germany study journey — and it's easy to miss a step if you treat it as a separate exam rather than part of your APS timeline.

At Keemaya, we walk students through Germany university applications, APS and documentation every intake. This guide lays out what dMAT actually is, who needs it, and how to sequence it against everything else on your checklist.

01 · The basics

What is dMAT, in plain terms?

A standardised academic aptitude test — not a subject exam, and not a replacement for APS.

The dMAT assesses analytical thinking, cognitive ability, academic problem-solving and the application of information, rather than memorised subject knowledge. For eligible Indian students, its General Academic Module has been added to the APS documentation process for Master's applications to Germany.

It's administered by g.a.s.t., while the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS India) continues to handle academic document verification.

Note — dMAT does not replace APS. It's an additional requirement layered on top, for applicants who fall within the applicable criteria.

02 · Eligibility

Who actually needs to take it?

The requirement targets specific undergraduate fields and a specific intake window — check yours before assuming either way.

Applies

  • Bachelor's degrees in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or Management
  • Applicants targeting Summer Semester 2027 or later
  • Some interdisciplinary programmes — check the official subject list, don't go by degree title alone

Exempt

  • Bachelor's applicants (dMAT concerns Master's applicants)
  • PhD applicants
  • Degrees outside the affected fields
  • Transitional exemptions for some applicants who'd already started APS before dMAT began

03 · How it fits together

dMAT and APS: the connection

dMAT doesn't replace APS — it becomes one more checkpoint inside it, for the applicants it covers.

Documents APS application dMAT requirement APS verification APS cert.
Documents → APS application → dMAT requirement → APS verification → APS certificate

Plan both processes together — don't treat dMAT as a standalone entrance exam that's separate from your APS timeline.

Can you apply for APS before taking dMAT?

Yes. APS India allows applicants to proceed with APS documentation while a dMAT certificate is still pending. What it won't do is issue the APS certificate until the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and verified — worth remembering if you're working against a university deadline.

Keemaya tip — if dMAT applies to you, don't postpone APS while you wait for your result. Plan university shortlist, dMAT, APS and application deadlines as one timeline, not four.

05 · Test centres

Where you can sit the dMAT

Ten Indian cities are currently listed, plus one centre in Nepal. Seats are limited — register early for your preferred city.

06 · Exam pattern

What's actually inside the test

Core Module

General cognitive and analytical ability, across several subtests.

  • Logical reasoning
  • Pattern recognition
  • Mathematical thinking
  • Analytical problem-solving

General Academic Module

The module that matters most for the APS-linked requirement — applying cognitive and analytical skills to academic problems. Runs roughly 3.5 hours including a break.

What it's testing for

Not how much you've memorised — how you reason.

Analysing information Recognising patterns Interpreting relationships Applying information to new situations Logical problem-solving Transferring knowledge

07 · Preparation

How to prepare, in order

Understand the format first

Before practising questions, learn how the Core and General Academic modules are structured.

Practise in short, regular sessions

Consistent short sessions beat a single cramming push right before the exam.

Build reasoning speed

The test is timed — get comfortable analysing information efficiently, not just correctly.

Review your mistakes, not just your score

Understand why an answer was wrong and look for a pattern across your errors.

Start with official materials

Use the official dMAT preparation resources — figure sequences, equations, Latin squares, logical relationships — before turning to third-party material.

08 · After the exam

Your certificate, and what it does (and doesn't) guarantee

You'll receive an official dMAT certificate showing your score, percentile rank and module results. If dMAT applies to you, this certificate goes to APS India and is reflected on your APS certificate. It's valid indefinitely — no need to retake it for a later intake.

It does not guarantee admission. Each university and programme sets its own criteria — degree, grades, subject match, ECTS, language proficiency, work experience, motivation letter and, where applicable, dMAT results all factor in separately.

09 · Don't confuse these

dMAT vs. IELTS vs. GRE

dMAT

Academic aptitude test; an added APS requirement for eligible Indian applicants.

IELTS / TOEFL

English-language proficiency — may be required separately for admission.

GRE

A separate graduate-level test some universities require or accept.

Depending on your university and programme, you may need to satisfy more than one of these at once.

RequirementPurpose
dMATAcademic aptitude assessment for applicable applicants
APSVerification of academic documents for applicants from India
IELTS / TOEFLEnglish-language proficiency
University applicationEvaluation for admission to the selected programme
Student visaPermission to enter Germany for study

Is dMAT required for Bachelor's students?
No

The current requirement concerns selected Master's applicants only.

Is dMAT required for PhD applicants?
No

PhD applicants currently sit outside the dMAT requirement.

I have a B.Tech. Do I need dMAT?

If your B.Tech falls under the affected Engineering field and you're applying for a relevant Master's intake, it may apply to you. Check the latest APS guidance for your specific case.

I have a B.Com or BBA. Do I need dMAT?

Applicants from affected Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business and Management backgrounds may be required to take it. Interdisciplinary degrees should be checked against the official classification.

Can I submit APS before taking dMAT?
Yes

Does dMAT replace APS?

It's an additional requirement layered on top of APS, not a substitute for it.

Does dMAT replace IELTS?
No

They assess different things. If your university requires IELTS or another language test, you'll need to meet that separately.

The current fee is €150, paid at registration. The certificate itself is valid indefinitely.

Does a high dMAT score guarantee admission?
No

Admission decisions sit with individual universities, based on their own programme-specific eligibility and selection criteria.

Who actually runs the exam?

dMAT is administered by g.a.s.t. APS India continues to handle the document-verification side.
